We follow the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) Guidelines
for Loft and Bunk Beds
Dorm Use: The CPSC requirements are if the bed is used in an
institutional environment (ie. dorm room), then Safety Rails are not
required.
Home Use: The CPSC requirements for non-institutional beds (ie: home or
apartment, for children and adults) is that safety rails are required on all four sides
with a small opening to enter the loft. The top of the safety rail must be
at least 5" above the top of the mattress and there can not be any openings
larger
than 3½" anywhere
above the mattress foundation. We refer to these as Home Use
Beds.
Each Safety Rail Set contains 4
safety rails, one for each of the sides. The number of Safety Rail Sets
required is based on the thickness of the
mattress. If your mattress is 6" - 8" thick, then 2 sets of safety rails
are required. For 10" to 14" thick 3 sets
and for 16" - 18" thick 4 sets are required.

Enhanced Solid 2x6 Back Rail
To save space, the back (long
side) of most
loft and bunk beds are placed up against a wall. Because of this, we use
plywood
for the back rail, which is
wider (9-1/2") than the front rail and gives the loft extreme support and stability. If you are planning on placing the bed away
from the wall so the back is visible and if you want the back to look exactly
like the front, we have an Enhanced Solid 2x6 Back Rail
available. Also, if you place the loft in front of a window the Enhanced Solid Back Rail is narrower (5-1/2") and will bring more light into the room. The Enhanced Solid Back Rail replaces the plywood back with a solid 2x6 (same width as the
front rail).
