Product Specifications

Our tongue & groove construction gives our beds extreme support and stability.  End ladders are notched, screwed and bolted to the bed rails.  The bed is assembled with screws and 3/8" carriage bolts, no nails that will come loose over time, this makes for an extremely sturdy and heavy duty loft or bunk bed.

Made in the USA.  Our loft bed and bunk beds are custom built. To gain maximum space and to meet your and your college's requirements, we customize each bed at no additional cost to your exact mattress thickness and ceiling height. This allows our beds to use any size home or college supplied mattress of any thickness and any ceiling height.  Design your loft with our Height Calculator.  You can see how the loft will fit into your room by using our Room Planner & Design Guide.

Mattress Foundation Bed Slats.  All beds come with a set of bed slats that will fill the mattress area with a 3" gap between the slats.  Our slats are 1-1/2" thick (some of our competitors have only 4 slats that are only 3/4" thick and others require you to supply your own bunkie board).  The 3" gap between the slats allows the mattress to breath and air out, something that is definitely needed in a college dorm room environment.  Please note, you do not need to supply a box spring, bunkie board or plywood with our beds, you can place the mattress directly on top of our bed slats.

The Weight Capacity of all of our beds is 1000 pounds of evenly distributed weight.  With our tongue & groove construction and extremely heavy duty design, it makes our beds one of the sturdiest on the market and will hold up to the toughest youth, teen,  college or adult environment.  Remember, the weight capacity includes the weight of the person plus the mattress.

Wood Specifications.  Our beds are made from kiln-dried heat-treated Western Spruce (softwood) grown in the Pacific Northwest.  It is a special grade that is specifically selected for us.  Since it grows in a cooler climate, it has fewer knots and the boards stay nice and straight than other wood speciesThe legs are 2x6, front rail is 2x6, back rail is 1/2" plywood, ladder rungs are 2x4.  The safety rails, shelving, backboards and desktops are made from MDF, a recycled material.  We use MDF because it is very smooth, uniform and takes paint well.

The beds come unfinished ready to be be painted or stained.  We do recommend finishing the bed as unfinished softwood will dry out (or absorb moisture in very humid climates) and surface cracks may appear over time.  Surface cracks will not affect the stability of the loft.  From our customer surveys it appears that most lofts used in homes are painted and most college lofts are left unfinished.  For staining the loft, we recommend using Minwax PolyShades all-in-one stain and polyurethane finish, it does a real nice job on all the boards including the MDF pieces.  If you are looking for more environmental friendly products, consider using Timbersoy from DwellSmart.

We require that the loft be assembled within 30 days of delivery.  If left unassembled for a longer period of time, under some climate conditions unfinished wood may shrink or warp and some of the pieces may not fit properly.  The warranty is void if the loft is not assembled within 30 days of arrival.

Lofts are not fire-retardant.  If your college requires fire-retardant wood we recommend you use a fire-retardant coating, click here for more information.

FAQ: Can I use your Loft Bed in my college dorm room?                                                                   sample of existing dorm bed

Yes.  Our loft beds were designed to be used in college dorms and off-campus apartments.  Most college dorm beds can be disassembled and the metal spring frame and mattress used on our loft.

For example, with the dorm bed pictured here, → you can remove the headboard and footboard and place the metal frame and mattress on top of our bed slats.  You can store the headboard and

footboard behind the loft against the wall and out of the way.

For example, the loft shown below has a 6" mattress and there is 58" of headroom underneath the bed slats.  The student in the picture is 5' 9" tall and when sitting down, has about 6" of headroom from the top of his head to bed slats.  From the top of the mattress there is 30" of space to the 8' ceiling above.
